Each month KPTZ’s Chris Bricker joins co-hosts, Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg and Port Commissioner Pam Petranek to bring you news, updates and stories surrounding our vibrant maritime community. In June, the historic fishing vessel Western Flyer will return to Port Townsend, where it underwent a multi-year restoration by the artisans from the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op. There will be a week-long schedule of student programs and community events at Point Hudson and the Northwest Maritime Center, with special tours of the boat on June7. Originally built in Tacoma in 1937, the Western Flyer is best known for carrying John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts on their 1940 Gulf of California expedition, later chronicled in The Log from the Sea of Cortez. Joining us in conversation are Pete Rust, Member-Owner of the Port Townsend Shipwright’s Co-op; the Western Flyer’s Captain Paul Tate; and Sherry Flumerfelt, Executive Director of the Western Flyer Foundation.
