Attention Please!

Don White Tribute

(Airdate: March 24, 2025) This tribute to Don for his work on Radio, Theater and Spoken Word features excerpts of stories read by Don on Phil Andrus’ KPTZ programs Cats in Our Laps (and previously Tossed Salad).  It features Phil’s comments, and thoughts from Deborah Kate Hammond, a long-time friend of and colleague Don.  It also features thoughts and memories from Genevieve Barlow, Artistic Director of Saltfire Theater Company. Don White’s last stage performance was with Genevieve and her company at Fort Worden in August of 2024.

Meredith Jordan

They discussed Sunshine Week; A nonpartisan collaboration among groups in the journalism, civic, education, government and private sectors that shines a light on the importance of public records and open government. She also will discussed community journalism in general and the Leader in particular.

The Hobbit

(Airdate: March 10, 2025) KPTZ’s Genevieve Barlow spoke with some of the company of the Port Townsend Youth Theatre and OCEAN production of The Hobbit: Marc Weinblatt – Director/Project Coordinator, Luca Tapogna (16)  – Gandalf, Caleb Sigmond (12) – Bilbo, and Ruby Groussman (15) – Balin/Voice of Smaug. Fans of the book and movie can expect Bilbo the hobbit, Gandalf the wizard, dwarves, elves, goblins, a giant dragon and, of course, Gollum! This exciting youth project provides the opportunity to make theater not only fun and entertaining, but also a powerful multi-generational educational experience as participants range from grades 2 – 12. This ambitious production features costumes by Libby Wennstrom, giant puppets and shadow puppetry under the guidance of Puppet Masters, Celia Fulton-Walden and Thaddeus Jurczynski, and live music led by Kristin Smith. Democracy Now is Back

(Airdate: March 3, 2025) KPTZ is bringing back Democracy Now on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to noon. In this Attention Please! we talked about the reasons for making this change. We started with some information sent in by KPTZ Program Coordinator Karen Anderson (who was unable to join us on-air). Danny Barnes

(Airdate: February 17, 2025) On this special edition of Attention Please!, we sit down with banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes, a world-renowned musician who happens to be our neighbor here on the Olympic Peninsula. Awarded the prestigious Steve Martin Banjo Prize in 2015, Danny has played with legends like Bill Frisell, John Paul Jones, and Dave Matthews – but remains remarkably humble about his influence. Danny talks about his musical roots, his time with the genre-blending band The Bad Livers, and what drew him to the banjo in the first place. He also gives us a preview of his upcoming free concert in Port Townsend, where he’ll explore the roots of American gospel music. Gardening Lectures and Art from Rubbish

(Airdate: January 6, 2025) This edition of Attention Please! brings together four individuals from two organizations.  We begin with Susanne Eggleston and Harry Hayward of the Jefferson County Master Gardeners Foundation. Our topic with them is the Foundation’s 2025 Yard & Garden Lecture Series, which begins on January 11. Our second pair of guests are Tracy Grisman and Margie McDonald of the A.I.R.E. program, now a part of Beyond Waste Action Group, which appoints an artist in residence to create art from refuse at the Jefferson County transfer station. Hosted by Phil Andrus.
