Taylor Clark and co-host John Mauro were joined by Jefferson PUD Commissioner Ken Collins, who gave us some history about the PUD, and some exciting information about grants the PUD has received. We talked about different services the PUD supplies. not just power, but also water and broadband/internet service. We also had a moment to talk about KPTZ’s move to Fort Worden on May 1. KPTZ is a PUD customer for both Internet and our dedicated fiber connection to our transmitter. And of course power.

Co-Hosts City Manager John Mauro and KPTZ’s Chris Bricker (sitting in for Taylor Clark), welcome journalist, writer and artist Mitzi Jo Gordon to Brewocracy Now. We talk about Mitzi’s journalistic and artistic life in the St. Petersburg-Tampa Bay Area, her life as an artist amid the bustle of Brooklyn and its all too hectic city pace, and then her choice to settle in Port Townsend.  Once introduced to our town by her sister, Mitzi immediately knew she had found an artistic home. Socially engaged art as a genre that’s experiential, collaborative, and participatory, has been a significant side to Mitzi’s creative practice. She talks about her brief stint as Managing Editor of the Leader, and the importance of making honest choices—and ultimately the acceptance of her new role as Director of the Port Townsend Creative District.

Taylor Clark was joined by guest host Shelly Leavens (Director of Communications and Marketing for the city of Port Townsend) and we welcomed Natalie Maitland (Director of Operations for Fort Worden Hospitality) who a member of the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee. LTAC give grants to organizations to promote tourism on the north Olympic Peninsula, with a focus on furthering year round activities and events. Please consider attending the next LTAC meeting March 27 and provide your input on what to do about the visitors information center. We also talked with Natalie at the very end about plans at the fort for the Guardhouse.

Taylor Clark and co-host John Mauro talked with Port Townsend Police Chief Thomas Olson about what’s going on with the Port Townsend police department, including some interesting statistics from Chief Olson’s presentation to City Council. It turns out the crime is down! We also talked about staffing, community policing, traffic enforcement, and accident hot spots.

Taylor Clark welcomed a special co-host: Shelly Leavens, Director of Communications and Marketing for the city of Port Townsend. We talked with Michael Todd, Parks & Facilities Manager about a grant the city has received to plant trees and remove invasive plants from city parks. We also talked about the skate park, which is being renamed in honor of Seamus Sims. Shelly also invited Taylor to come to the State of the City presentation by Mayor Faber and John Mauro, which will be Monday, March 4, doors open at 9:30 at the Point Hudson Pavilion.

Taylor welcomed Steve King, Director of Public Works for the City of Port Townsend as his co-host today; They were joined by Naomi Stern, Finance Specialist for the City of Port Townsend, and we talked about the utility rate increases and also changes that have been made in the program to assist households who might need a hand. The old program helps only about 4% of households, but he new program should help many more. Listen in to learn more.
