#195 Carlyn Stark, Sailor

(Reprise airdate: February 22, 2022) CARLYN STARK, ICON OF THE PT MARITIME INDUSTRY. In this reprise of an earlier episode, Our Town Host Maryanne McNellis interviews Carlyn Stark, who was something of a legend in the local maritime industry. Carlyn died recently after decades devoted to the sea and to teaching kids maritime skills. She was one of the early dreamers and donors who helped make the Northwest Maritime Center a reality. She ran Camp Four Winds Westward Ho on Orcas Island for many years. It’s a unique camp that somehow blends art and poetry with adventures on the sea. Fittingly, the kids attending the camp today sail every summer on a 161-foot yawl named “the Carlyn.” She grew up in great wealth as a daughter of the Kaiser family (Kaiser Permanente, Kaiser Steel, the Kaiser family Foundation, and other related companies). She was an adventurer at heart – always ready for the next chapter in an extraordinary life. Carlin leaves behind four children, multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a great many friends and colleagues.

This week on Community Tides, hosts Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, and KPTZ’s Chris Bricker talk with special guest Cindy Brooks, North Beach resident, and the newly-minted Executive Director of EDC Team Jefferson (The Economic Development Council). Cindy worked most recently as the Economic Recovery Coordinator for the North Olympic Development Council. She holds a BA from Evergreen State College in Liberal arts and an MBA from Presidio Graduate School of San Francisco. We learn about her unique background in economic development, along with her thinking surrounding it. She has a holistic approach to leadership, based in relationship building, and she’s demonstrated a stellar knowledge of rural entrepreneurship and business ownership models that support community health and wealth. On this show we find out more about her vision and the role of the EDC.

Washington Boating Policy

(Airdate: February 16, 2022) Since 1956, The Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW) has been the voice of Washington boaters in Olympia on topics ranging from taxes to the acquisition of places like Sucia Island State Park. This week’s Coastal Café with host Aaron Barnett is a conversation with Bob Wise, the current president of RBAW who shares with us some of RBAW’s activities regarding current legislation in Olympia potentially impacting the recreational boating community. In addition to policy and legislative highlights, Mr. Wise talks about the acquisition of Lake Bay Marina and Pier through the RBAW Marine Parks Conservancy.

Our Working Waterfront ~ 2/11

This month on Our Working Waterfront, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and co-hosts, Port Commissioner Pam Petranek and Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg wander the boatyard and meet up with brothers Tim and Mike Quant. Tim  & Mike have been commercial fishermen all their lives, and throughout their years they’ve acquired valuable skills in the maritime trades.
In their “retirement” from commercial fishing, they tend to the haul-out needs of the fv Sundancer and enjoy life ashore as craftsmen.  Now they can fish leisurely, without the long hours and physical demands of the commercial season. In his monthly recap, Eron tells us about the reorganization of the Port’s staff structure, and he applauds the arrival of the Port’s new Travel Lift,  Pam give us the historical timeline of the boatyard since before the arrival of the very first Lift to the present day. Of course, brothers Mike and Tim give us a few stories to spice up our visit.

Today on Brewocracy Now KPTZ host Tim Quackenbush and City Manager John Mauro discussed the following topics: expanded hours at City Hall and the Library; proposed State legislation addressing the construction of ADUs; the Poplar Alliance’s opposition to removal of the poplar trees on Sims Way; the Cook Avenue development and implications for future changes to the City’s permitting process and potential impact fees; the City’s map of traffic incidents, and pedestrian and cyclist safety.
