(Airdate: June 1, 2021) Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Melanie Bakin, a graduating senior at Port Townsend High School. High school was going smoothly for Melanie – she was even going to be dancing in the student production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” But the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled that production. In fact, it cancelled all in-person classes, sports and other student activities for the better part of the academic year. But the high school is now inching toward a complete reopening. The junior/senior prom was a smash hit, even though it was held outside on the tennis courts with various social distancing protocols in place. The class of 2020 wasn’t so lucky. Now Melanie and her classmates are excited about getting on with their lives and are pondering that age-old question: “what next?”

The pandemic has upended the homeless shelter system, and even before COVID-19, the lack of availability of affordable housing and the homelessness crisis were in need of both urgent and long-term solutions. Jefferson County has its eyes on a 14.4-acre parcel in Port Townsend to build out a campus that would include housing for the homeless, transitional tiny houses, a shelter, and a full array of wrap-around services. In this edition of Compass, we speak with County Commissioner Greg Brotherton about the process, community input, and consideration of available alternatives.
For this edition of Community Tides, Jen Kingfisher, who oversees Non-Profit Relations for the Jefferson Community Foundation, joins Chris Bricker as co-host. They discuss the most recent grant awards from the COVID Fund, and how the Fund is an example of what a community foundation does every day. Jen reviews the stats in grant awards since March of last year, including the last round of the Fund devoted to Arts and Culture. She emphasizes the importance of the nurturing effect of these grants in helping our community recover and reopen as we move out of the pandemic. The Foundation is seeking proposals that demonstrate avenues to spark communal joy and foster local community connections. The deadline is July 2.
