Our Working Waterfront

(Airdate: May 17, 2021) For our special Birthday episode of Our Working Waterfront, we check in with Co-Host Eron Berg, Port of Port Townsend’s Port Director, for his regular recap for the month, with a special emphasis on developments in the formulation of a Citizens’ planning process for the Port properties there. Then Chris Bricker and Co-Host, Port Commissioner Pam Petranek take a walk through the boatyard to encounter some of our Women of the Waterfront. They speak with shipwrights Esther Whitmore of Haven Boatworks and Angi Lungu of the Shipwrights’ Co-Op. Then they visit Port Townsend sailing legend, Carol Hasse and her wooden boat Lorraine in the marina, and finally a delightful conversation with Erika and Alyson of Port Townsend Sails, locally known as the Sail Loft, in Point Hudson.

Take an Audio Tour of KPTZ’s Future Digs!

After a decade of working in the cramped quarters of a former portable classroom at the Mountain View Commons, KPTZ will soon be moving into a spacious new facility in what is said to be Fort Worden’s first building. This week on the Compass, we tour the new studios as the remodel nears completion, and talk about the importance of community radio and the opportunities the move presents.

Community Tides ~ 5/14

Co-Hosts Chris Bricker and Siobhan Canty, President and CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, get together in-studio for the first time since this program debuted. They look over the accomplishments the Jefferson County community have made during COVID-19 times, and how, through the generosity of so many, we’ve been able to creatively help to weather storms in education, mental health, child care, housing, food insecurity. emergency services, systemic racism, businesses, all the while aiming to be loving stewards of one another. Our own Community Radio station, KPTZ, has played a major role in connecting us all together during these times, and a 10th Birthday Celebration is definitely in order!

KPTZ Radio Port Townsend Day is May 14

At the May 3 Port Townsend City Council meeting, the agenda included Mayor Sandoval’s reading of the City’s Proclamation to establish May 14, 2021 as KPTZ Radio Day in Port Townsend. In honor of the station’s 10th anniversary of broadcasting at 91.9FM, KPTZ Programming Lead Ruby Fitch (upper left) joined the online Council meeting to accept the proclamation, expressing gratitude on behalf of everyone at the station. Brewocracy Now with John Mauro ~ 5/13

On today’s Brewocracy Now host Tim Quackenbush and City Manager John Mauro were joined by Mayor Michelle Sandoval who read the KPTZ Radio Day Proclamation. Other topics discussed included: state and federal relief funding for affordable housing infrastructure, upcoming Public Works Week, and the Drinking Water Report available on line.

Puget Sound Restoration Fund

(First airdate: May 12, 2021) Since 1997, Puget Sound Restoration Fund has been working collaboratively with many partners to restore marine habitat, water quality, and native species in Puget Sound. They do this by getting wet: literally diving in, scuba gear and all, to help restore key species and habitats from Olympia oysters to kelp forests. MaryAnn Wagner gets the inside story on this amazing organization with Deputy Director Jodie Toft.

County Public Health Report ~ 5/10

Today, May 10, Jefferson County Public Health Officer Dr. Tom Locke shared his assessment of the pandemic in Jefferson County and answered questions submitted by KPTZ listeners. Department of Emergency Management Director Willie Bence also gave an update on current Emergency Operations actions, in light of the most recent developments.
