(Airdate: February 8, 2021) Eclipsed recently by the raging pandemic that will soon have killed half a million Americans, and a near-toppling of Congress by white supremacist insurgents encouraged by the ex-president, climate change continues to accelerate relentlessly and nearing exponential increase. Are the social disruptions caused by the pandemic along with the anxiety induced by political warfare just a mere foretaste of things to come? If so, how do we as a community prepare to meet a daunting future? Hosts Dahr Jamail and Robert Ambrose examine these difficult-to-discuss aspects of our new normal that pose an urgent challenge to all of us and our communities.

Compass for 2/06/21

In early August of 2019, KPTZ reporter Chris Bricker had the opportunity to speak with author and activist Mary Wynn Ashford M.D., who has been a leader in the international peace and disarmament movement for several decades. The conversation has significance for our community now, because of ongoing efforts of local activist and anti-nuclear advocate, Doug Milholland in a proclamation announced recently by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, as had the Port Townsend City Council and the Jefferson County Board of Health done before them, in support of the the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The Treaty was adopted on July 7, 2017, opened for signature on September 20, 2017, and entered into force on January 22, 2021. It has now been signed by 50 nations. The Board’s Proclamation encourages the United States to participate. January 22, 2021 was declared by the Board of Commissioners a day of celebration and support of this historic milestone. KPTZ is pleased to reprise our timely conversation with Mary Wynn Ashford.

Community Tides ~ 2/05

Chris Bricker and Siobhan Canty talk about the importance of keeping our energy and mental well-being in a good state as we continue to define the “new normal.” By continuing to work together we can address the challenges of navigating a constantly changing landscape. While many things in our community are going very well, there are still a lot of needs. We discuss some of the ongoing, positive efforts in our Community that are helping us face those challenges. We also talk about what the lessons in awareness we hope will “stick” as we move back out into the real world.

Citizen Scientist – Connecting with the World Around You

(Airdate: February 2, 2021) As part of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center team, Betsy Carlson oversees the Citizen Science projects. Around the world folks of all ages engage in citizen science – participating in projects in which volunteers and scientists work together to investigate real world concerns, “crowdsourcing” that has the added bonus of giving volunteers a real sense of community. On this program, Missy Nielsen of Everybody Can discusses with Bets what it means to be a Citizen Scientist and the role of Citizen Science at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.
