Compass for 1/30/21

This week on the Compass we once again talk with Jefferson County Public Health Officer Dr. Tom Locke as he tries to recruit volunteers to help with a mass vaccination campaign against COVID-19 – when and if the plentiful supply of vaccine required for such a campaign becomes available. We also talk with him about a proposal to completely overhaul Washington’s public health system now before the state legislature that, if passed, would relegate county health officers like him to the dustbin of history.

Through Science to Health ~ 1/29/21

On this episode of Through Science to Health, host Chris Bricker talks once again with Dr. Joe Mattern, Chief Medical Officer for Jefferson Health Care. He’s charged with overseeing the logistics of distributing the COVID-19 vaccines for Jefferson Healthcare.

Dr. Mattern gives us an overview of logistics, from supply and allocation to scheduling. He emphasizes the importance of following protocols, even after receiving the second dose. He also discusses the variants of the virus, dosage efficacy, and projections for getting our population here in the county vaccinated. He describes the collaborative and thorough planning taking place that assures that no one is left behind. He also walks us through the steps that we should expect at the vaccination site.

(First airdate: January 26, 2021) SARA PENHALLEGON: ANIMAL RESCUE ANGEL. Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Sara Penhallegon, founder & director of Center Valley Animal Rescue. Sara’s passion for saving animals began early: she became a vegetarian at the age of nine. Today the non-profit organization sits on about 30 acres of sprawling hills in center valley. It houses kittens & puppies, cats & dogs, rabbits & gerbils. All sorts of livestock live in one of several barns. A wildlife center houses eagles, cougars, coyotes, whatever. When a herd of starving buffalo was seized by the state, they became residents of Center Valley. Most animals are either released back into the wild or adopted. But there are exceptions. A baby bison was born onsite to a starving mother who couldn’t care for him. Sara & her team stepped in to raise him. Now he’s a permanent resident…a rather large & clumsy “pet.” Then there was the cougar who checked herself into one of the pens one night. There’s always excitement at Center Valley Animal Rescue.

County Public Health Report ~ 1/25

Today, January 25th, 2021, our local Public Health Officer, Dr. Tom Locke shared his assessment of the pandemic in Jefferson County and answered questions submitted from KPTZ listeners.

Dr. Locke spoke of the need to temper our expectations, as the vaccine supply is limited as well as the enormity of the task of vaccinating so many residents.

Compass for 1/23/21

With the rapid climb to the top of New York Times bestseller list in 2018 of his book How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence, author and journalist Michael Pollan managed to crack open a door that had been slammed shut on psychedelic drugs in the 1970s as part of the culture wars that were raging in the nation at that time.

In the two years since the book’s publication, several municipalities have taken steps to decriminalize the class of drugs that in multiple studies have been show not only to be safe, but beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions, from addiction to reducing the anxiety of facing mortality.

After the recent first arrest in Jefferson County for possession of psychedelic mushrooms in more than twenty years, a local group calling itself the Port Townsend Psychedelic Society is calling for the city and county to join the decriminalization movement by adopting a resolution defunding the pursuit or prosecution of such cases. Today on the Compass, we talk with one of the co-founders of the group, Erin Reading.

Through Science to Health ~ 1/22/21

This afternoon on Through Science to Health KPTZ’s host Chris Bricker summarized some of the national COVID-19 statistics and Lynn Sorensen, RN reviewed Dr Locke’s January 19 update to the BOCC and community. Vaccines to protect the populace against COVID-19 are being given through Jefferson Healthcare’s drive up clinics with registration online through the JHC website. The rollout of the vaccine depends on supply that the state distributes each week to the counties. New guidelines were announced by the state of Washington this week on the tiers/ages eligible for the vaccine. The community is asked to be patient with the process.
