#133 Wayne Chimenti, Community Boat Project

(First airdate: August 13, 2019) WAYNE CHIMENTI: CREATING SAILORS & SUCCESS STORIES. Our Town Host Maryanne McNellis interviews Wayne Chimenti, director of the Community Boat Project and former skipper of the Adventuress. For years Wayne has been instrumental in helping to rescue troubled teens through maritime training. He calls that course “beautiful chaos”.  But now he’s onto a new program called “Shelter From the Storm”. It’s designed to teach practical construction skills to young adults (18 to 25) who haven’t found their footing. Among other projects, they are building tiny homes. Most of them are what Wayne gently calls “housing insecure”, so being able to essentially build shelter is a huge step towards a productive and financially secure future.

Seafood Certification

(First airdate: August 8, 2019) This month’s Coastal Café explores what is behind the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) seafood certification label as we speak with Pippa Kohn, an MSC fishery assessment manager based in in Seattle. Pippa unpacks and describes some of the protocols, guidelines and challenges behind the blue label we see on products such as wild-caught tuna, salmon and even Antarctic Toothfish.

(First airdate: August 6, 2019) Missy Nielsen of Everybody Can talks with the “Gleaners” from the Quimper Community Harvest Gleaning Crew about the bountiful produce that is collected and distributed to others in need. Gleaners harvest and distribute local fruits and vegetables to the community and schools. Seth Roland and Doug Van Allen discuss the process and opportunities to get involved, learn a bit about fruit handling and make some new friends.

In this edition of Compass, KPTZ reporter Chris Bricker speaks with Mary-Wynne Ashford, M.D., author and activist, who has been a leader in the international peace and disarmament movement for several decades.  She’ll be one of the keynote speakers this week during events at the Cotton Building.  From our civilization’s naive exploration of Nuclear Energy in the 1940s and 1950s to coping in subsequent decades with the Genie that’s out of the bottle, it is important for us to remember two profound days in history that changed the world. On August 6th and 9th the community of Port Townsend will reflect on the meaning, tragedy and lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with music, poetry, movies, speakers, ceremony and prayer.
