Our Working Waterfront ~ 4/09

Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg gives us a report on the exciting happenings and latest news for the month of April. Then his co-hosts, Commissioner Pam Petranek and KPTZ’s Chris Bricker take students from the Port Townsend Maritime Academy out on the boatyard and marina to visit Rick Oltman, owner of F/V Cape Clear and PTHS graduate Eric Pokorny, who has recently earned his 100-ton Captain’s License. They visit the legendary shipwright Dave Thompson, and then young shipwright Pete Stein for a tour of his 10-person co-op – a shared space for independent shipwrights.

Booklovers’ Cafe – Tim McNulty, Salmon Cedar, Rock, Rain

(Airdate: April 9, 2024) Host Cris Wilson has the pleasure of talking with Tim McNulty about Salmon, Cedar, Rock, and Rain: Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. This book is a rich and vivid study of both Olympic Park and its surrounding peninsula, featuring stunning full-color photos alongside natural and human histories. The essays explore why the Olympics and its natural, cultural, and economic communities are worth understanding and why sustaining a resilient future benefits us all! Moving in the Right Direction

(Airdate: April 8, 2024) Taylor Clark toured around Port Townsend with Scott Walker from the Local 2020 Transportation Lab as we looked at transportation problems and solutions. The Transportation Lab is putting on a one day conference called “Moving in the Right Direction” to consider how transportation policy contributes to building a livable, and wonderful community. Taylor Clark was joined by Port Townsend City Councilor (and Deputy Mayor) Amy Howard and we talked about the history and mission of the new Equity, Access and Rights (EAR) Advisory Board to City Council.

Booklovers’ Cafe – Jon Karpilow, A Liberal’s Search for America

(Airdate: June 4, 2024) Jon Karpilow visited Cris Wilson at the new Fort Worden studio for Booklovers’ Cafe to talk about his new book, A Liberal’s Search for America: Tales from the Gunshop. Jon has landed in PT after a spell in Calaveras County where he worked in a gun shop called The Rusty Knife. The characters that hang out here are indeed memorable and a picture of Americans we rarely spend much time with here in the PT bubble. Alternatively funny and frightening, there are indeed some good tales. Jon is currently writing features for the Leader and volunteering where he is needed.
