Charlie Doyle, the Program Host and Manager of the KPTZ Musical Pub, hosted two hours of Celtic and Folk Music, Sunday afternoons from 3 until 5pm. Charlie explored Celtic music from all of the countries that make up the Seven Celtic Nations. Music ranged from a Celtic harper playing an 18th Century tune written by Irishman Turlough O’Carolan, to over-the-top performances from shows like Celtic Woman or Riverdance. Folk singers from around the world were also spotlighted. During each show, there was a humorous interlude where Charlie would deal with a performer of dubious talent who wants to be on the show.

Radio Kilombo, airing weekly on Thursdays from 9-10pm, curates the Earth’s finest collection of seductive African and Afro-Latin grooves. The selections are three parts club culture, one part roots culture, and all parts positive. From Global Bass to Afro-Latin Folkloric to Rare Groove, join us for our weekly convocation, hear the story of the rhythms, and let the music stir your soul!

Roots & Twang, which aired Fridays in the 3-5pm time slot from June 2022 through April 2024, was your weekly dose of Country, Roots and Americana music hosted by Karen Anderson, the “Truck Driver’s Daughter.”  Karen brought a diverse mix of artists you wouldn’t hear on commercial Country radio stations, and broke the stereotypes of the genre with her eclectic musical selections. Some listeners said, “It’s the country show for people who don’t like country.”

From 11am to noon each Saturday, KPTZ airs Sing It, Sister!  Ellen Bonjorno has been a dance & party DJ for over 30 years, and has always enjoyed introducing her audience to music they may never have heard, putting those “new” songs together with classics we all know and love. Inspired years ago by 2 male friends who only listened to music by women in their home every Sunday, she decided to do a program featuring all women’s voices. You’ll hear songs from every genre, from jazz to gospel, bluegrass, disco, folk, rock and reggae and from every era, from the 1920s to today. Thanks for tuning in to Sing It, Sister!

Song Club Radio Hour, airing Saturdays from 10-11pm, is a show where participants are given a randomly selected song title along with a combination of three prompts and parameters. Using these guidelines, they have one week to write and record a song. Host Joel Myers compiles all of the submissions and the resulting show is a magical potluck of songs and sounds no one has ever heard before! Welcome to Song Club Radio Hour. His career has included a stint as the Director of Global Sound with the Smithsonian Center for Folk Life and Cultural Heritage, as well as 30 years producing and hosting regular programs on KEXP and KBCS in Seattle. Dave Long came to KPTZ with more than 25 years of community radio experience, all volunteer. Dave’s musical passion was to share traditional styles and sources revolving around fiddle music. Stringband Theory is an eclectic mix of traditional songs, ballads, hoedowns, and dance music from Celtic lands, Canada, Appalachia, and all across the US.
