Song Club Radio Hour, airing Saturdays from 10-11pm, is a show where participants are given a randomly selected song title along with a combination of three prompts and parameters. Using these guidelines, they have one week to write and record a song. Host Joel Myers compiles all of the submissions and the resulting show is a magical potluck of songs and sounds no one has ever heard before! Welcome to Song Club Radio Hour. On Thursdays from 6:30 to 8pm, host Gary Forbes always has a song knocking around in his head and now he’s going to bring them to you! Gary will pull tunes from a variety of traditions – rock, R and B, jazz, and Americana, following his ears on a musical trail through his personal collection, and other sources found on the journey. His career has included a stint as the Director of Global Sound with the Smithsonian Center for Folk Life and Cultural Heritage, as well as 30 years producing and hosting regular programs on KEXP and KBCS in Seattle. Host Eileen Deutsch brings her eclectic mix of great music to KPTZ. Her show, The Front Porch, features folk music in all of its various aspects including premier selections from the worlds of Americana, bluegrass, contemporary, and vintage singer/songwriters, as well as many hybrid variations with elements of folk, both domestic and abroad. When Eileen isn’t curating her selections for The Front Porch, you can find her doing plein air art work, caring for her canines, or working on endless projects at her Port Townsend home. My general love of music started early, with my Elvis-era sister and Beatles-era brother as mentors. But when I heard Ian Anderson growl those famous lyrics from Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung” (“Snot is running down his nose……greasy fingers….smeary, shabby clothes.”) I knew I had found MY music.

Progressive Rock (or Prog for short) with the likes of Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and King Crimson not only consumed me, but also provided the bonus of being highly annoying to my parents.
But that was years ago……

So what does my love for 70s Progressive Rock have to do with being a DJ at KPTZ in this millennium? Prog is long dead, right?
Not true…!

Progressive Rock survived in the underground during the 80s and 90s and has quietly, but doggedly resurged into a current, respected genre.
So that’s where I come in…

I’m your Prog connection to newer artists like Steven Wilson, The Flower Kings, The Mercury Tree, and thousands of others you’ve probably never heard of. It’s complex and interesting music…but listen to it enough and you might find yourself becoming a fellow ‘ProgHead’.
